This week we chose Zoi Safiya Vafias of Studio Agency for a profile in The Brisbanians, a fun side project on the blog where Kristina takes her gorgeous photos and I get to quiz interesting people around town about their secret movie viewing behaviour.
Zoi launched her own fashion wholesaling business back in 2007 when she was just 19 years old (I’m pretty sure when I was 19 they were lucky if I even turned up at my part-time job… at a call centre). Since then she has grown Studio Agency from a one-woman show to a team of eight, overseeing distribution, sales, development, styling and marketing for fashion brands; everything from high-end to commercial fast fashion to international to local labels.
You will honestly be hard pressed to meet a lovelier person than Zoi, but possibly my favourite thing about her is her love for Jerry Lewis… and Kuffs!
The movie quote you love to recite is… WAY too many to choose from, but my main move line recites come from Anchorman or Rush Hour 1, 2 & 3. “I don’t understand, why would they not want my help?” “Because they don’t like you, I don’t like you”. “I don’t care, I here for the girl.” “The girl don’t like you, you came all the way here for nothing!”
Farrah Fawcett or Cameron Diaz? Farrah will always be iconic for generations to come.
Download or DVD? I’m not good with tech stuff like downloading so DVD is still my fave.
Top 3 favourite fashion moments on film? Olivia Newton-John from Grease, her ensemble at the fair was epic and will forever be iconic. SJP from Sex in the City (1 & 2), too hard to choose one outfit. And The Great Gatsby, I really enjoyed this movie. (But I guess you can’t really go wrong with a Leonardo DiCaprio movie, I have loved all of his films.) I LOVE all of the outfits, girls and guys. The dresses were stunning with so much detail and class and the men’s suiting back then was so fun and had a lot of character.
Name a movie you absolutely positively cannot STAND. TED
Rom com or rom? Romantic Comedy
Who is your movie style icon? Tricky question.. I’d have to say Eva Mendez if I had to choose one. Classy as hell in most of her films but can still rock casual or bummy clothes with style.
The one movie my husband and I can agree on is… The one movie we LOVE watching together is 300! He loves the gore and storyline and I love the story and the aaahhhh.. abbtastic special effects of Gerard Butler 😉
Favourite Disney movie? Oooo that’s a hard one, huge Disney fan.. The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.
Choc top or popcorn? Popcorn hands down! I’m not a huge fan of chocolate I much prefer savoury. I actually have a huge weakness for salt and vinegar popcorn.
First actor you had a crush on? Christian Slater from the movie Kuffs!! I was obsessed as a kid.
Favourite 80s film? I loved all of the Beverly Hills Cops. I grew up on Eddie Murphy so I have always had pretty high standards for comedy ever since then.
The cinema classic that best sums up Old Hollywood to me is… anything that had Jerry Lewis in it. I have early memories of watching his movies and shows with my grandad who was a huge fan of Jerry’s. I later got nicknamed Jerry Lewis from my dad…. clearly I watched too many of his movies and picked up a little of his material.
Favourite movie soundtrack? Bad Boys and Romeo + Juliet soundtracks are two of my favourite ones.
Favourite chick flick? I’m not really a “chick flicks” kind of girl but Bridesmaids is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I much prefer it to most traditional chick flicks.
The last foreign film you watched was… The Intouchables. Brilliant Movie!! Loved it so much I ended up watching it three times within a month.
Last time you cried watching a film? I get teary to most sad movies, but the last time I properly got through a whole tissue box was to PS. I Love You with Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank. I read the book also and it’s just as full on and emotional. After watching it every time, I think… why do I keep putting myself through this? HAHA. I love it though.
Favourite Tom Hanks film? Forrest Gump hands down. It’s actually one of my all time faves too.
The best Australian film ever made is… The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert is one of my favourites.
A good example of the small screen rivalling the big screen is…. Suits or Royal Pains. Both really witty and super addictive!
